Bucs tripped up by Mississippi College on the road

CLINTON, Miss. – Christian Brothers University men's basketball (7-12, 3-10 GSC) faced a challenging matchup against Mississippi College (7-12, 3-10 GSC), ultimately falling short with a final score of 65-53. Despite the defeat, the Buccaneers showcased moments of brilliance and determination throughout the game.

First Half Highlights:

CBU started strong, holding their largest lead of seven points at the 10:04 mark in the first half, thanks to an 8-0 scoring run fueled by precise shot-making and aggressive rebounding. Christian Thompson was instrumental during this stretch, dominating the offensive boards and contributing with key putbacks. However, Mississippi College quickly adjusted, going on a 12-point run spearheaded by Rashad Bolden, who would become the standout performer of the game with a total of 41 points.

CBU's second-chance opportunities kept them competitive early, with 14 points coming from offensive rebounds in the first half. Iman Kheirati hit a critical three-pointer late in the half, keeping the Buccaneers within striking distance as they entered halftime trailing 37-30.

Second Half Struggles:

CBU's offense slowed in the second half, with their field goal percentage dropping to 30.8 percent. Although Thompson and Kyler Mann continued to battle in the paint, scoring and securing rebounds, Mississippi College's defense tightened, forcing 21 turnovers over the course of the game, which led to 28 points off turnovers.

Bolden's relentless scoring barrage widened the gap, hitting crucial mid-range jumpers and finishing fast breaks with ease. The Buccaneers managed to keep the deficit to single digits up until the midway point of the half, but Mississippi College's consistent scoring prevailed in the end.

Key Performers:
  • Christian Thompson: A double-double machine, Thompson tallied 16 points and 15 rebounds, leading the charge in the paint.
  • Iman Kheirati: Contributed 16 points, including four three-pointers, and added 12 rebounds.
  • Tane Kirisome: A steady presence with 13 points, three assists and two steals.
Statistical Highlights:
  • Rebounds: CBU dominated the boards with a 46-23 advantage, particularly excelling in offensive rebounds.
  • Second Chance Points: CBU capitalized with 23 points, showcasing their resilience under the basket.
Next Up:

The Bucs will travel to Union (11-8, 7-6 GSC) next Thursday. The meeting between the two teams earlier this season ended in a narrow 74-70 defeat for CBU. The Bulldogs are coming off a 69-59 defeat to Delta State.
