Softball opens 2025 season with a pair of wins

Game 1: Christian Brothers' Dickerson Throws No-Hitter in Season-Opening Win Over Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (Jan. 31, 2025) Behind a dominant no-hitter from senior hurler Gabby Dickerson, Christian Brothers opened its season in commanding fashion with a 6-0 victory over Henderson State on Friday afternoon at Dee White Field.

Dickerson was nearly untouchable in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout while striking out six and walking none. She faced just 22 batters, one over the minimum, thanks to a stingy Christian Brothers defense that committed only one error. The win marked her first no-hitter of the season and set the tone for the Buccaneers' campaign.

Christian Brothers (1-0) provided plenty of offensive support early, erupting for four runs in the top of the second inning. Freshman Ashley Williamson jump started the rally with an RBI double, while junior Kate Candies added a run-scoring single. The Buccaneers tacked on a run in the fifth on a sacrifice grounder and added another insurance run in the seventh on a clutch two-out hit by sophomore Marin Beeson.

Williamson led the offense with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, driving in two runs and swiping a base. Senior Summer Alexander added a key RBI double, while Beeson scored twice and notched two hits of her own.

Henderson State (0-1) struggled to generate any offense, failing to register a hit against Dickerson. The Reddies' starter, Makenna Keeton, took the loss after allowing five runs—four earned—on five hits in five innings of work. Presley Applegate pitched the final two frames, surrendering one run on two hits.

Game 2: Christian Brothers Powers Past Northwest Missouri State Behind Schooler's Complete-Game Gem

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. (Jan. 31, 2025) Christian Brothers University extended its unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 6-1 victory over Northwest Missouri State on Friday night at Langston Field.

Junior pitcher Emily Schooler was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete-game while allowing just one run on five hits. Schooler struck out five and walked four across seven innings, keeping the Bearcats off balance throughout the contest.

The Buccaneers (2-0) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, capitalizing on an RBI groundout to make it 1-0. After a quiet second frame, they extended their advantage in the third when Riley Simpson delivered a two-run double to the gap, giving CBU a 3-1 cushion.

Christian Brothers' biggest offensive explosion came in the sixth inning when Summer Alexander launched a three-run home run to break the game open. Alexander finished 1-for-3 on the night, but her long ball provided all the insurance the Buccaneers needed to secure the win.

Simpson led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Marin Beeson chipped in with a hit, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Mackenzie Gieseler also reached base in all three of her at bats, drawing two walks and securing a single.

Northwest Missouri State (0-2) managed five hits but struggled to string together any momentum against Schooler. The Bearcats' lone run came in the second inning, taking advantage of a defensive miscue to briefly tie the game at 1-1 before CBU pulled away.

Bearcats' starter Olivia Moyer suffered the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings. Kylee Rockhold relieved her in the sixth but surrendered three runs, including Alexander's homer, in one inning of work.

With the win, the Buccaneers will look to stay unbeaten as they continue their early-season slate on Saturday.
