CBU falls to No. 6 Alabama Huntsville despite strong second-half effort

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In an energetic Gulf South Conference matchup at Canale Arena on Saturday, the Christian Brothers University men's basketball team (6-7, 2-5 GSC) showcased determination but were ultimately outpaced by nationally-ranked No. 6 Alabama Huntsville (13-1, 8-0 GSC), succumbing to an 89-72 defeat.

First Half: Early Struggles

The game began with a dominant display by Alabama Huntsville, who outscored Christian Brothers 47-26 in the first half. The Chargers established control with a potent inside game, scoring 28 points in the paint. Matthew Thurman and Daniel Saylor were key contributors, combining for 24 points and setting a physical tone that the Buccaneers struggled to counter.

Christian Brothers, however, found some rhythm through Iman Kheirati, who tallied seven points and six rebounds in the opening half. Despite his effort on both ends, the Buccaneers were hampered by a lack of defensive stops and turnovers in crucial moments.

Second Half: A Spirited Fightback

The Buccaneers came alive in the second half, cutting into the deficit with a 46-42 scoring advantage. They leveraged fast breaks and strong performances in the paint, led by Christian Thompson and Allen Hughes, who scored 16 and 12 points respectively. Tane Kirisome added eight points, showcasing his ability to finish in transition.

Christian Brothers' defense showed improvement, forcing key turnovers that led to easy buckets. However, Alabama Huntsville's shooting efficiency, especially from Thurman and Blake Campbell, who finished with 19 and 20 points respectively, kept the Buccaneers at bay.

Key Stats and Highlights

  • Field Goal Shooting: Christian Brothers shot 48.5 percent overall but struggled from beyond the arc, going 3-for-10 (30 percent). Huntsville maintained a 53.8 percent shooting clip, including 10 three-pointers.
  • Rebounding Battle: The Buccaneers edged the Chargers 37-30 on the boards. However, Christian Brothers' rebounding prowess only resulted in six second-chance points compared to Huntsville's 11.
  • Fast Break Points: The Buccaneers excelled in transition, outscoring the Chargers 14-9 in fast break points.
  • Bench Production: Alabama Huntsville's depth was a factor, with their bench contributing 26 points compared to Christian Brothers' 15.

  • Allen Hughes: Stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, eight assists, and six rebounds, acting as the engine of the offense.
