MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Christian Brothers University volleyball left it all on the court Saturday afternoon, pushing Montevallo to the limit before falling in a heart-pounding five-set Gulf South Conference showdown (25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 25-21, 11-15) inside Central State Bank Arena.
The Lady Bucs (7–12, 2–6 GSC) came out swinging, taking the opening set behind a balanced attack led by Calah Jackson, who finished with a team-high 20 kills and added two blocks. Sarah Helms added 11 kills and four blocks, while Ella Schumacher and Abby Wheaton chipped in a combined 14 kills to help CBU capture the early momentum.
After Montevallo (8–10, 5–4 GSC) rallied to take the next two frames, CBU refused to back down. In the fourth set, the Lady Bucs caught fire behind the playmaking of Carleiny Morillo, who dished out 44 assists and added 10 digs. A late run featuring key kills from Helms and Jackson powered the Lady Bucs to a 25–21 win, forcing a decisive fifth set.
Montevallo edged ahead early in the final frame, but CBU kept the pressure on with strong defensive efforts from Sophia Nowacki, who tallied 22 digs, and Stella Lukaszuk, who added 14. Despite the comeback effort, Montevallo's front line proved too much down the stretch as the Falcons sealed the match 15–11.
The Lady Bucs recorded 55 kills, 81 digs, and six total blocks in one of their most competitive road performances of the season.
Christian Brothers returns to action next week for another GSC matchup as they look to turn their gritty play into a victory.
