Christian Brothers University kicked off its 2025–26 men's basketball season on the road Tuesday night, taking on Harding inside the Rhodes-Reaves Field House. With a roster that is almost completely new, featuring only one senior, the Buccaneers used the opener as a first real test of chemistry, toughness, and identity.
Despite falling 70–48, the Bucs showed flashes of what this young group is capable of. Their effort on the glass stood out immediately, as CBU pulled down an impressive 47 rebounds, including 18 offensive boards, giving themselves repeated second-chance opportunities throughout the night.
Leading the scoring charge were Marquis Gill, who poured in 15 points, and Turner Duncan and Iman Kheirati, each adding 11 points. Kheirati also dominated on the glass with 9 rebounds, while Caleb Gaitor nearly recorded a double-double himself with 9 boards and an active defensive presence.
CBU's defense showed early-season bite as well, blocking five shots and forcing Harding into stretches of contested looks. Their 15 fast-break points also highlighted the type of pace this young lineup is capable of when they settle into rhythm.
Offensively, the Bucs are still learning one another and getting comfortable in game situations, a natural challenge for a roster built almost entirely from the ground up. But the foundation is clear: effort, physicality, and a willingness to compete, even against experienced opponents.
As this first-year group continues developing chemistry and gaining confidence, the season ahead offers opportunity for rapid growth. With only one senior and so many fresh faces gaining big minutes early, the Buccaneers' debut showcased both the challenges of youth and the promise this new era holds.
The journey has just begun, and this team is already showing it's ready to fight.
