Men's Basketball comes up short in overtime thriller at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. — Christian Brothers University men's basketball suffered a heartbreaking 70-68 overtime loss to the University of West Alabama on Saturday evening at Pruitt Hall, despite a dominant rebounding effort and a strong performance from Tane Kirisome.

The Buccaneers (9-15, 5-13 GSC) held a lead for nearly 22 minutes and were ahead by five at halftime, but West Alabama (13-12, 9-10 GSC) clawed back in the second half to force overtime before securing the victory in the final seconds.

Kirisome Leads the Way

Tane Kirisome paced the Buccaneers with a game-high 23 points, shooting 8-for-18 from the field, including three three-pointers. The junior guard kept CBU in the game late with clutch baskets.

Christian Thompson was a force in the paint, posting a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds, including 12 offensive boards. Kyler Mann contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds in a well-rounded effort, while Allen Hughes chipped in nine points and four assists.

Strong Start, Tough Finish

The Buccaneers built an early lead in the first half, leading by as many as nine with 12:50 remaining. They outscored UWA 36-26 in the paint and dominated the second-chance points battle, 29-5. However, their struggles from beyond the arc (4-for-18, 22.2%) and at the free-throw line (16-for-27, 59.3%) proved costly.

West Alabama took advantage of CBU's cold shooting stretch in the second half, tying the game at 61-61 on a three-pointer by Thaddeus Williams with three seconds left in regulation.

Overtime Heartbreak

In overtime, Kirisome put CBU ahead 67-63 with a layup at the 3:14 mark, but UWA responded with a 7-1 run. With five seconds left, Williams drove into the lane for a game-winning layup, sealing the 70-68 victory for the Tigers.

Williams led West Alabama with 23 points, while Travion McCray added 19.

Up Next

Christian Brothers will host nationally-ranked Valdosta State (20-4, 15-3 GSC) on Thursday, Feb. 20 next. The Blazers were recently upset by Delta State, 96-92, this past Thursday before they won convincingly, 80-68, against Mississippi College today.
