MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Despite a competitive start, Christian Brothers University (0-24, 0-19 GSC) struggled to keep pace with the University of West Florida (17-9, 13-7 GSC) in a 80-59 defeat Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.
CBU started strong, trailing just 18-16 after the first quarter thanks to solid inside play from Valencia McFall, who finished with a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds. However, the Lady Bucs' offensive production faltered as UWF's depth proved overwhelming, with the Argos' bench outscoring CBU's reserves 54-19.
The game saw six lead changes in the first half, with Christian Brothers briefly taking a 20-18 advantage on a SeQuoia Carroll putback at the 8:50 mark of the second quarter. However, a 10-0 UWF run over the next two minutes put the visitors back in command and allowed West Florida to take a 38-29 lead into the break.
West Florida continued to build on its lead in the third quarter, outscoring CBU 17-14. Guard Rylie Stephens was dominant from beyond the arc, knocking down five three-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points. The Lady Bucs, meanwhile, converted just 25 percent (3-of-12) from the field in the period, struggling to keep up with UWF's efficient offense.
The Argos pulled away late, closing the game with a 25-point fourth quarter, their largest scoring period of the game. Chloe Crawford banked five points while Tierney Echols swiped two steals in the fourth quarter to showcase their determination.
The Lady Bucs will host Valdosta State on Monday at 3:30 p.m. next. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday night, but was changed due to weather.
