Memphis, TN- Christian Brothers survived a classic at Canale Arena, edging Delta State 66–64 in a game that had everything, momentum swings, big-time plays, and a heart-pounding finish.
From the opening tip, the pace was relentless. Delta State jumped out early and even built a 10-point lead in the first half, but CBU refused to blink. Marquis Gill caught fire, knocking down timely shots and fueling a late first-half surge that sent the Buccaneers into the break up 33–30. Every possession felt earned, and the tone was set for a second half that would not let up.
The final 20 minutes turned into a heavyweight fight. The lead changed hands 13 times, with eight ties, as neither team could create separation. Nigel Quaynor controlled the paint with energy and athleticism, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks, repeatedly erasing Delta State chances at the rim. Iman Kheirati brought toughness and hustle, posting 15 points and 10 boards, while Gill continued to deliver, finishing with a game-high 24 points on an efficient 9-for-13 shooting.
Down the stretch, every play mattered. Delta State's Je'Marion Westbrook answered again and again, keeping the pressure on and tying the game late at 63. But CBU stayed composed. With two seconds left and the crowd on its feet, Caleb Gaitor stepped to the line and calmly knocked down the front end of a one-and-one to give the Buccaneers a two-point edge. Delta State's last-second three rattled out, sealing a dramatic season-opening win.
CBU finished with advantages in points in the paint, fast-break scoring, and defensive stops when it mattered most. It was gritty, loud, and thrilling, the kind of game that reminds everyone why Canale Arena is such a tough place to play.
Final: Christian Brothers 66, Delta State 64.
