CLINTON, Miss. — Christian Brothers University Women's Soccer refused to go away Wednesday afternoon, battling back from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Mississippi Christian in Gulf South Conference action.
The Buccaneers were put under pressure almost immediately as Mississippi Christian found the opening goal just 2:19 into the match. CBU went into halftime trailing 1-0 after being held to one shot in the opening 45 minutes.
But the Bucs came out of the break with a different level of urgency.
CBU generated four shots in the second half, and in the 70th minute, Frida Bergqvist delivered the moment the Bucs needed. Bergqvist found the back of the net at the 69:27 mark for her first goal of the season, pulling CBU even at 1-1.
From there, the Buccaneers stood their ground.
Goalkeeper Kaylee Allen finished with three saves while playing all 90 minutes, helping CBU withstand an 18-shot attack from Mississippi Christian. The Bucs' defense kept the hosts off the scoreboard for the final 87-plus minutes of the match.
Despite being outshot 18-5, CBU made its opportunities count, putting four of its five attempts on goal. Bergqvist scored on her only shot of the match, while Ella Morton recorded two attempts and Sarah Elliott and Emma Browning also put shots on frame.
The result moves CBU to 1-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in GSC play, but Wednesday's performance showed something bigger than the record: a Buccaneer team that kept fighting until it found a way back into the match.
