MEMPHIS, TN. – Christian Brothers University men's soccer gave the Homecoming crowd plenty to cheer about Saturday night, controlling much of the action against Trevecca Nazarene before a late goal handed the Buccaneers a heartbreaking 1-0 Gulf South Conference defeat at Signaigo Field.
The final score told only part of the story.
CBU controlled the attacking numbers throughout the night, outshooting Trevecca 17-3 and putting 10 shots on goal compared to just two for the Trojans. The Buccaneers fired nine shots in the first half and another eight after halftime while holding Trevecca to only one first-half attempt.
AJ Bowman led the attack with three shots, all three on goal. Olivier van der Tuin also fired three attempts and put two on frame, while Wouter Ederveen recorded two shots on goal. Matthias Randeburg and Christopher Armitage added two attempts apiece as CBU continued applying pressure.
Despite CBU creating chance after chance, Trevecca goalkeeper Hunter Walker turned away eight shots and the Trojans' defense kept the Bucs off the scoreboard.
The deciding moment came at 84:56, when Zion Jones found the back of the net for Trevecca. The late strike proved the difference in a match where the Bucs controlled much of the possession and attacking pressure.
The loss moved CBU to 3-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in GSC play.
Even without the result, the atmosphere at Signaigo Field provided a fitting close to a day of Homecoming activities as alumni, students and supporters returned to campus and packed in to support the Bucs.
For CBU, the performance showed plenty to build on. The chances were there, the defensive pressure was there, and the Bucs limited their opponent to just three shots. The next step is turning those opportunities into goals as conference play continues.
