Goodwin has coached 20 All-GSC players, including 2000 GSC Player of the Year Zac Scott and 2006 GSC Co-Player of the Year John Raymond Hehn. Hehn was also named to the Rawlings/ABCA All-America Second Team in 2006.  In 2007, Josh Shelton won the GSC West Freshman of the Year award.

Goodwin has served as head coach at Kingsbury, Whitehaven, and Cordova High Schools, amassing a 72% winning percentage. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Christian Brothers HS. Goodwin's teams won two city and district championships and sent several players on to the college level. Goodwin was the inaugural baseball coach at Cordova HS in 1997 and with Sophomores only, took his second squad to a third place finish in the traditionally tough District 14-AAA. From 1990-1996, Coach Goodwin served in several capacities for the Memphis Chicks, the AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals at the time.

A 1976 graduate of The University of Tennessee at Martin, Coach Goodwin and wife Debbie have two sons, Casey and Jeff, who are members of the CBU baseball team.
