Resurgent Defense Lifts Lady Bucs 2-0

Elin Svavarsdottir had a goal and an assist to lift the Lady Bucs to a 2-0 win over Harding Sunday afternoon.
MEMPHIS—After giving up eight goals in the previous two games, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs turned in a clean sheet in a 2-0 Gulf South Conference win over Harding Sunday afternoon, keeping them in contention for next month's GSC Tournament.

The Lady Bucs (9-6-1, 3-2-1 GSC) pulled away with a dominating second-half performance team-wide.  The first half saw the two teams battle to a scoreless draw, with Harding (6-9-1, 1-5-1) taking a 10-9 edge in shots for the half.

The second half was a much different story as the Lady Bucs out-shot HU 14-5 for the half.  Staci Long (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) scored the game-winner in the 64th minute, putting one in from point-blank range after a cross from Elin Svavarsdottir (Reykjavík, Iceland/Menntaskolinn vid Hamrahlid).  Svavarsdottir put it out of reach in the 79th minute, finding the net on a free kick from 30 yards out to give CBU the 2-0 win despite playing the final 15 minutes a player short after a red card.

Libby Hake (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury HS) made four saves as she earned her third shutout, while Harding keeper Chelsea Hornbeck was brilliant with a career-high 13 saves to keep Harding in it as the Lady Bucs held a 16-4 margin in shots on goal.

With the win, the Lady Bucs move into a tie with West Georgia for the fourth and final GSC Tournament berth with seven points.  West Florida is in first place with 14 points, followed by Montevallo at 13 and Delta State with eight.

The Lady Bucs will host Alabama-Huntsville Wednesday night at 5 p.m.
