Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs held off LeMoyne-Owen for a 77-70 win Saturday afternoon in the season opener for both schools.
The Lady Bucs (1-0) used 25 points, seven rebounds, and four assists from
Tanaeya Worden (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North HS) as they led most of the way.
The Lady Bucs built a 10-point lead at 28-18 on a
Katie Quinton (Dresden, Tenn./Dresden HS) three-pointer with 7:07 left in the opening half, but the Lady Magicians (0-1) answered with 11 straight points to take their first lead of the game with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
The guard combo of Worden and
Tameka Wooten (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) keyed the decisive 8-0 burst for the Lady Bucs over a 1:45 stretch of the second half. With the Lady Bucs clinging to a 53-51 lead, Wooten buried a three-pointer to extend the lead to five points with 8:38 remaining in the half. Worden followed suit with a layup at 7:35, and she buried a three-pointer with 6:53 to play, putting the lead back to double figures at 61-51.
LeMoyne-Owen cut the lead back to 68-66, but a
Kat Butler (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS) triple put the Lady Bucs back up five with 1:24 remaining, and the Lady Magicians never came closer than that again.
Michelle Malone (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) was the only other Lady Buc in double figures with 13 points, while all 10 Lady Bucs who played scored at least one basket.
The Lady Bucs will return to the court Tuesday night at 5 p.m. as they face Mid-Continent.
