Lady Bucs Rally, Stun First-Place HSU in Five

Kelly Nolan had 18 kills and 17 digs to lead the Lady Bucs past Henderson State in five sets Thursday night.
MEMPHIS—For two sets, first-place Henderson State appeared well on their way to a sweep of the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs, but the Lady Bucs rallied for a five-set upset win in Gulf South Conference West Division play Thursday night at Canale Arena.

The Lady Bucs (14-11, 3-4 GSC West) looked overmatched in the first two sets, falling 25-12 and 25-19.  But late in the second set, the Lady Bucs began to recover frm the slow start, recovering from a 16-7 hole to tie the set at 18 before HSU (11-12, 5-2) closed out the win.  The Lady Bucs' momentum carried over to the third set as they won 25-19.  They pulled away to a big 22-14 lead in the fourth set before winning 25-20 to send the match to five sets.

In the fifth set, the Lady Reddies appeared to have taken control with four straight points to go ahead 13-7, but the Lady Bucs answered with six straight to knot the set at 13.  After HSU scored one point, the Lady Bucs claimed the final three for a 16-14 win in the clincher.

Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) led the way for the Lady Bucs with 18 kills to go with 17 digs.  Logan Westphal (Herndon, Va./Herndon HS) pounded 15 kills, and Hanna Orendorff (Renton, Wash./Liberty HS) added 12.  Michelle Hein (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS) also had a strong all-around night with 13 kills and 16 digs, while Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) posted a team-best 22 digs.  Kelsey Green (Memphis, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) added 11 digs to her team-high 57 assists.

The Lady Bucs will try to carry the momentum forward to two road matches next week: a Tuesday night trip to Ouachita Baptist and a Saturday afternoon tilt at Southern Arkansas.  They return home Tuesday, Oct. 27, to face Harding at 7 p.m.
