Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs evened their record at 1-1 as they held off Lane 65-60 Thursday night at Canale Arena.
The Lady Bucs (1-1) never trailed, but they were never able to extend their lead beyond single digits as Lane (0-1) kept the game within reach.
Katie Hume (Memphis, Tenn./Evangelical Christian School) scored the knockout blow for the Lady Bucs on a back-door layup to give CBU a 64-59 lead with 50.1 seconds remaining. From there, the Lady Bucs kept Lane from scoring until a Deima Thompson free throw with five seconds to play set the final margin.
Normanique Johnson (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added six rebounds, three steals, and three assists to her team-high 17 points to lead the Lady Bucs.
Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) had 13 points and eight rebounds, while
Jasmine Ellis (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) had game-highs of 14 rebounds and four blocks to go with her 12 points.
Tameka Wooten (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) added 10 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Veronica Jackson scored 18 with a game-high five steals to pace Lane, while Shelice Crater added 15.
Both teams struggled offensively, with the Lady Bucs shooting 35.1 percent (20-of-57) to Lane's 30.2 percent (19-of-63). The Lady Bucs out-rebounded Lane 46-45, but Lane held an 18-17 edge on the offensive boards. Both teams committed 18 turnovers.
The Lady Bucs hit the road this weekend to take on West Georgia Saturday at 2 p.m. before returning home Tuesday night at 5 p.m. against Mid-Continent in the first of four straight home games.
