Lady Bucs Hold Off Wolves 42-35

Katie Hume scored 10 points as the Lady Bucs won 42-35 at West Georgia Saturday afternoon.
Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs survived a sloppy, defense-oriented battle at West Georgia Saturday afternoon, winning 42-35 despite shooting 33 percent from the floor and 36 percent at the free throw line.

The Lady Bucs (2-1) went on an 11-0 run early in the first half and never trailed again.  The Wolves (1-2) had taken a 5-3 lead on an Anelia Murray layup with 18:03 remaining in the first half.  Normanique Johnson (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) answered with a three-pointer with 16:40 remaining in the first half, and a steal and a fast-break layup pushed the Lady Bucs' lead to 8-5.  Back-to-back three-pointers by Katie Hume (Memphis, Tenn./Evangelical Christian School) and Tameka Wooten (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) extended the Lady Bucs' lead to 14-5 with 14:44 remaining in the half.

After UWG trimmed the lead to one point again, a 10-1 run sandwiching the halftime break put the Lady Bucs back up by 10, and UWG never came closer than four points again.  Hume started the run on a layup with 2:50 remaining in the first half, and she capped it with a three-pointer and a layup with 14:20 remaining in the game, lifting CBU to its biggest lead of the day at 29-19.

Wooten led the Lady Bucs with 11 points, while Hume added 10.  Johnson had four steals and six rebounds to go with nine points, and Jasmine Ellis (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) had three blocks and 13 rebounds.

Renate Lopez led UWG with 15 points.

The Lady Bucs shot just 33.3 percent (16-of-48), including 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from three-point range, and their struggles extended to the free throw line, where they were just 36.4 percent (4-of-11).  The Lady Bucs did, however, shine on the defensive end, holding UWG to 21.1 percent (12-of-57) overall and 35 percent (7-of-20) from three-point range.  UWG also struggled at the free throw line, shooting 40 percent (4-of-10).

The Lady Bucs held a 41-40 edge on the boards, with UWG grabbing 15 offensive boards to the Lady Bucs' nine.  The Lady Bucs committed 16 turnovers to UWG's 14.

The Lady Bucs open a four-game homestand Tuesday night against Mid-Continent.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
