Lady Bucs Finish Strong With 67-61 Win

Senior Kat Butler ended her CBU career on a high note as she scored 12 points with six assists to help the Lady Bucs win 67-61 over Arkansas Tech, ending the season on a three-game winning streak.
Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs closed out their 2008-09 season on a three-game winning streak as they knocked off Arkansas Tech 67-61 Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.

The Lady Bucs (11-16, 4-10 GSC West) survived a see-saw game with 14 ties and 11 lead changes as they ended the game with an 11-4 run.

Neither team led by more than six points in the game.  Early on, the Golden Suns (19-8, 9-5) appeared poised to pull away quickly, opening up a 12-6 lead after the first six minutes as Amanda Grappe knocked down a jumper.

The Lady Bucs stayed in striking distance, finally pulling ahead with an 11-2 run sandwiching the halftime break.  Tanaeya Worden (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North HS) made a three-pointer and a layup to end the first half, and after a Nikki Earles fastbreak layup for ATU, back-to-back threes from Tameka Wooten (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) and Kat Butler (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS) gave the Lady Bucs a 30-27 lead with 18:40 remaining.

From there, the margins stayed razor-thin, with 13 ties and nine lead changes in the second half alone before four straight free throws by Worden and Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) put the Lady Bucs in front for good with 2:44 remaining.  The Golden Suns cut the lead to a point twice, but Butler, Worden, and DeBose made five of six free throws in the last minute to salt away the victory.

Worden scored a game-high 17 with six assists and four steals to lead four Lady Bucs in double figures.  DeBose scored 13, while Butler added 12 points to her six assists.  Wooten scored 11.

Amanda Grappe led the Golden Suns with 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals.  Rachel Brazzell scored 12, and Earles added 11.

With the win, the Lady Bucs end the season on a three-game winning streak.

CBU honored its five seniors, Kat Butler (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS), Michelle Malone (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS), Erin Nigh (Morristown, Ind./Morristown HS), Katie Quinton (Dresden, Tenn./Dresden HS), and Crystal Shelton (Nashville, Tenn./Hume Fogg) in pregame ceremonies.
