Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs out-scored host Southern Arkansas 18-9 over the final 5:30 as they won 71-64 to remain in sole possession of third place in the Gulf South Conference West Division.
The Lady Bucs (13-5, 4-2 GSC West) appeared well on their way to an easy win early as they jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the game's first 11 minutes.
Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) dominated the early part of the game, scoring seven of her 15 points to help the Lady Bucs build the lead.
The Lady Muleriders (6-12, 1-5) spent the next 22 minutes whittling away at the Lady Bucs' lead. A 15-3 run over five minutes of the second half gave them their first lead of the game at 55-53 on a Brittney Gatewood three-pointer with 5:52 remaining.
But the Lady Bucs were aggressive offensively over the final 5:30, drawing eight fouls and making 12 of 15 free throws during the decisive run.
Tameka Wooten (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) delivered the decisive blow with 59.6 seconds remaining as she drove baseline and scored a three-point play to extend the lead to 66-61.
Wooten scored a game-high 21 points with five rebounds and four assists to lead the Lady Bucs, bringing her conference scoring average to 16.0 ppg.
Normanique Johnson (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) scored 17 with five assists and three steals, while DeBose scored 15 with five rebounds.
Jasmine Ellis (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) added 11 with seven rebounds.
Kmaria Hobbs, the second-leading scorer in the GSC, led SAU with 19 points. Gatewood scored 18 off the bench, and Cha'Kia Lee contributed 12.
The Lady Bucs shot 77.8 percent (28-of-36) at the free throw line and 50 percent (5-of-10) from three-point range to go with 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from the floor overall. The Lady Bucs held SAU to 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor and 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from three-point range.
SAU out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 35-33, but the Lady Bucs forced 18 turnovers while committing 17.
The Lady Bucs come home Saturday to face No. 7 Arkansas Tech, who enters the game 18-0 and in first-place in the GSC West at 5-0 after their game tonight against Arkansas-Monticello was canceled due to inclement weather. CBU will honor the late Jackie Moore in a ceremony at halftime of the women's game. Moore, who played two years at CBU and was an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois, passed away suddenly in November.
