Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—A 25-2 run over six minutes late in the second half helped the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rally for a 79-68 win at Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday night in their final tune-up for Gulf South Conference West Division play.
The Lady Bucs (9-3) trailed for most of the first 32 minutes, falling behind by as much as 12 on an Erin Robbins layup with 16:18 remaining. Vacie Perry knocked down a jumper with 8:26 remaining to give the Lady Chargers a 60-54 lead, but a
Tameka Wooten (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) three-point play sparked the decisive run.
Three straight layups by
Jasmine Ellis (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) and
Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) put the Lady Bucs in front, and three straight
Katie Hume (Memphis, Tenn./Evangelical Christian School) three-pointers stretched the lead to double figures. When
Normanique Johnson (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) made a pair of free throws to end the run, the Lady Bucs led 79-62 with 2:15 remaining.
Hume led the Lady Bucs with a career-high 21 points on seven three-pointers, while Wooten scored 19 points. Ellis had 14 points and three blocks, while Johnson had 10 points, 12 assists, and eight steals. Johnson tied her career high in assists, previously set in November when CBU hosted UAH, and set a new career high in steals. Her 12 assists is third-most in school history, and eight steals is second-most.
Renita Lewis and Candace Lee led the Lady Chargers with 11 points each, while Monica Boatwright added 10.
The Lady Bucs shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) for the game, including 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from three-point range. UAH shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53), including a sizzling 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from beyond the arc.
The Lady Bucs were out-rebounded 38-36, but they held a 12-9 edge on the offensive boards and forced 24 UAH turnovers while committing 17.
The Lady Bucs open GSC West play Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. as they host Arkansas-Monticello.
