Box Score MEMPHIS—Junior guard
Normanique Johnson (Olive Branch, Miss., Olive Branch HS) scored on a contested layup with 36.9 seconds remaining to break a 62-all tie and lift the Lady Bucs to a 65-64 win over host LeMoyne-Owen Sunday night at Bruce Hall.
After the Lady Magicians (0-6) tied it at 62 on a Cheneka Anderson layup with 56 seconds remaining, Johnson tracked down a pass at the baseline behind the basket. She dribbled back into traffic, and with four Lady Magicians around her, she put a quick off-balance shot in for the game-winner. After a stop on the other end, Johnson made a free throw to stretch the CBU (6-5) lead to 65-62, and LOC scored an uncontested put-back layup as time expired to set the final margin.
The Lady Magicians led most of the way, and they threatened to pull away once in each half. In the opening stanza, they used an 18-7 run capped by a Tiffany Simpson basket to take a 26-14 lead with 7:36 remaining in the half before the Lady Bucs came back, taking a 36-35 lead on a
Briley Milfeld (Farmington, Mo./Farmington HS) three-pointer early in the second half.
After Milfeld's three, the Lady Magicians went on a 12-1 run capped by back-to-back Georgette McCullar three-pointers to take a 47-37 lead, again threatening to pull away. Another McCullar triple extended the lead to 51-40 with 10:34 remaining, but the Lady Bucs' defense buckled down, shutting LOC out for nearly four minutes to pull within a 51-48 margin on a
Casey Gregory (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) jumper with 7:21 remaining.
Aramis Judson (Bristow, Va./Stonewall Jackson HS) completed the comeback by making a three-pointer from the top of the key to lift the Lady Bucs to a 58-56 lead with 3:46 remaining. The Lady Bucs never trailed again, but LOC came back to tie the game at 62 to set up Johnson's heroics.
Johnson scored a game-high 17 points with five assists as she played all 40 minutes.
Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) had 16 points and nine rebounds.
Casey Gregory (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored 12 off the bench, and Judson added 11.
The Lady Bucs shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) as they overcame a 42-30 rebound margin that included a 16-7 edge in offensive boards. They held LOC to 37.5 percent (27-of-72) from the floor. The Lady Bucs shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) at the free throw line to LOC's 40 percent (4-of-10). CBU committed 16 turnovers while forcing 11.
The Lady Bucs return to the court Thursday, Jan. 6, when they visit Lambuth at 6 p.m. Their next home game is Thursday, Jan. 13, when they host No. 5 Arkansas Tech at 5 p.m.
