Lady Bucs' Biggest Rally Yet Edges SAU 64-61 in OT

Tameka Wooten celebrated her senior night with 19 points as the Lady Bucs rallied from 18 down to beat Southern Arkansas 64-61 in overtime Thursday night.
Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs' season of comebacks added another chapter Thursday night, rallying from a 43-25 halftime deficit to win 64-61 over Southern Arkansas to put the Lady Bucs on the cusp of a Gulf South Conference Tournament berth.

In the first half, nothing went right for the Lady Bucs (15-10, 6-7 GSC West), who fell behind 11-0 in the first two minutes and trailed by as many as 18 twice in the half, including a 43-25 halftime margin.  But in the second half, the Lady Bucs put the pressure on SAU (7-18, 2-11), using a 17-4 run to pull within 57-53 on a Tameka Wooten (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) layup with 5:57 remaining.

The Lady Muleriders answered the CBU burst with a Kmaria Hobbs fastbreak layup and a pair of Shanece Black free throws, pushing the lead back to six at 61-55 with 4:57 remaining, but SAU would not score again in regulation or in the five-minute overtime.

The Lady Bucs tied the game at 61 as Jasmine Ellis (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) scored and drew a foul with 13.0 seconds remaining, but she missed the potential game-winning free throw as the game went to overtime.  After three scoreless minutes to start overtime, Normanique Johnson (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) drew a foul and sank a free throw with 1:47 remaining, and Wooten sank two free throws with 25 seconds remaining to seal the win.

The win is the Lady Bucs' seventh comeback victroy from a deficit of 11 points or more, and the 18-point margin overcome eclipses their comeback against Ouachita Baptist as their biggest of the year.  CBU had trailed 48-31 against OBU before winning 65-62.

Wooten celebrated her Senior Night with a team-high 19 to go with seven rebounds and four assists.  Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) scored 17, while Johnson added 16 with four assists and four steals.  Ellis grabbed 14 rebounds to go with nine points.

Kmaria Hobbs led SAU with 27, while Cha'Kia Lee added 10.

After SAU shot 50 percent (16-of-32) in the first half, the Lady Bucs held them to 20 percent (8-of-40) the rest of the way as they finished 33 percent (24-of-72) overall.  The Lady Bucs shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) for the game.

The Lady Bucs entered Thursday's game needing a win and some help from Ouachita Baptist to get back into the GSC Tournament picture.  Shortly after CBU wrapped up its win over SAU, Ouachita Baptist guard Gabby Coleman banked in an off-balance three-pointer as time expired to hand Henderson State a 79-77 loss.

The Lady Bucs wrap up the regular season Saturday at 4 p.m. at Arkansas Tech.
