Box Score MEMPHIS—Visiting Southern Arkansas built a 14-6 lead in the first eight minutes and never trailed as they won 80-57 over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs, who were without both of their leading scorers for the first time this season.
The Lady Muleriders (3-13, 2-4 GSC West) used a 12-4 run capped by a Cha'Kia Lee three-pointer to build a 14-6 lead after an early 2-2 tie, and a 10-2 run late in the half stretched the lead to 34-19 on a Shelbi Cottingham triple with 3:50 remaining.
The Lady Bucs (7-12, 0-7) chipped away at the lead, coming as close as 44-37 after back-to-back threes by
Briley Milfeld (Farmington, Mo./Farmington HS) and
Jessica Green (Memphis, Tenn./Lausanne HS) with 16:27 remaining in the game, but SAU pushed the lead back to 53-39 with a quick 9-2 run, and the Lady Bucs never came closer than 10 points again.
Normanique Johnson (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) led the Lady Bucs with 22 points, while Green logged her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Bucs dressed just seven players, with
Caitlin House (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS),
Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS), and
Tressala Smith (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) unavailable. The three combine for 31.9 of the Lady Bucs' 65.6 ppg on the season.
Kmaria Hobbs led SAU with 19 points. Lee scored 17, and Goldie White tacked on 12 points and 10 rebounds. Shenelda Levingston and Shelbi Cottingham added 11 each.
The Lady Bucs shot just 32.0 percent (16-of-50), including 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from three-point range. SAU was 37.8 percent (28-of-74) overall, but they grabbed 25 offensive rebounds to the Lady Bucs' 26 defensive boards. In all, SAU out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 52-34 and forced 17 turnovers while committing nine.
The Lady Bucs open the second half of the GSC West schedule Thursday night at 5 p.m. as they welcome Arkansas-Monticello to Canale Arena.
