Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla.—Sixth-seeded Alabama-Huntsville stunned the third-seeded Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs with a three-set sweep in the Gulf South Conference quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the University of West Florida Field House.
The Lady Chargers (10-23) scored the last two points to break a 23-all tie to win the opening set after eight ties and three lead changes, with the Lady Bucs (24-10) leading as late as 20-19. In the second set, the Lady Bucs took a quick 5-1 lead, but UAH scored 18 of the next 22 points to take a commanding 19-9 lead en route to a 25-14 win in the set. In the third set, the Lady Bucs again stormed out to an early 9-2 lead, but UAH steadily whittled the lead back to striking distance, drawing even at 15-15. From there, neither team would lead by more than three points again, with UAH scoring the last two points to complete the sweep with a 29-27 win.
Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) and
Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) led the Lady Bucs with eight kills each, while
Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) posted a match-high 12 digs.
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected 25 assists.
Jessica Ruple led UAH with 14 kills. Angela Thurmond had 12, and Kelsey Williams added 10. Kelly Wilson led the team with 21 assists, and Kelly Wilson and Kaeli McCaghren led the Lady Chargers with nine digs each.
The Lady Bucs' postseason fate now sits in the hands of the NCAA. The Lady Bucs were ranked No. 7 in the South Region Rankings this week. SIAC champion Kentucky State has clinched an automatic berth, as well as SSC champion Tampa, the region's top-ranked team. They will be joined by the GSC champion, either North Alabama or West Florida, and five at-large teams. The regional field will be announced Sunday night at 9 p.m. at
