Box Score MEMPHIS—Visiting West Georgia used a pair of critical baskets as the shot clock expired in the final four minutes to break a 44-all tie and earn a 52-47 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.
The Wolves (7-8, 2-2 GSC) never trailed, using a 19-2 first-half run to build a 25-8 lead on a Shunice Hardy basket with 3:36 remaining in the first half. After the Lady Bucs (4-12, 1-3) trimmed the lead to 32-27 on an
Adrienne McKay (Olive Branch, Miss./Briarcrest Christian HS) jumper with 13:28 remaining, the Wolves went on a 9-3 run to extend their lead to 41-30 with 9:45 remaining.
The Lady Bucs responded with a 14-3 run sparked by a McKay jumper from the baseline and capped by a pair of free throws after McKay was fouled on a fastbreak, tying the game at 44 with 3:59 remaining. Just before the shot clock expired, UWG's Krystal Delph buried a long three-pointer from the right wing to break the tie with 3:30 remaining. After the Lady Bucs failed to score on the other end, Shakiyla McLin scored a putback as the shot clock ran out with 2:31 remaining after Mone Peoples missed a three-pointer, putting UWG in front 49-44. McKay scored a three-point play to cut the margin back to 49-47 with 2:05 remaining, but the Lady Bucs could not score again.
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored a team-high 16 points for the Lady Bucs, and McKay added 11 with a game-high four assists.
Hardy paced the Wolves with 21 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Peoples added 10 with three steals, and McLin had nine with three steals.
The Lady Bucs shot 31.8 percent (14-of-44) overall compared to the Wolves' 33.9 percent (19-of-56) overall. The Wolves out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 39-35, including a 16-12 edge in offensive rebounds, and they forced 21 CBU turnovers while committing 14.
The Lady Bucs return to action Thursday night at 5 p.m. when they host North Alabama.
