Box Score RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.—Host Arkansas Tech used a 16-2 run late in the first half and never allowed the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to come within 10 points again in a 58-41 win Tuesday night.
The Golden Suns (1-0) never trailed, but the 16-2 run stretched the lead to 33-10 after the Lady Bucs (0-2) had pulled within 17-8 on a
Sarah Combs (Bradford, Tenn./Bradford HS) bucket with 8:35 remaining in the first half. Freshman
Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) scored seven of her 12 points during a quick 10-1 burst early in the second half, cutting the ATU lead to 36-25 with 12:11 remaining.
ATU answered with an 11-3 run to extend the lead back to 47-28 on a Westin Taylor basket with 8:20 remaining, and the Lady Bucs never came closer than 14 again.
Candis Clear (Memphis, Tenn./East HS) led the Lady Bucs with 14 points, knocking down four three-pointers, and Reeves scored 12.
Amber Williams (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) pulled down 10 rebounds.
Jessica Weatherford led ATU with 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Caitlyn Spurgeon scored 10.
Both sides struggled to score, with ATU shooting 31 percent (28-of-58) to the Lady Bucs' 29.6 percent (16-of-54). ATU enjoyed a big advantage at the free throw line, shooting 75 percent (21-of-28) to the Lady Bucs' 3-of-10. The Golden Suns out-rebounded CBU 48-39 and forced 20 turnovers while committing 16.
The Lady Bucs have a week off before coming home next Tuesday night at 5 p.m. to take on Missouri-St. Louis in their home opener.
