Clear's Last-Minute Trey Lifts Lady Bucs, 62-61

Candis Clear's game-winning three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining gave the Lady Bucs a 62-61 win over Arkansas-Monticello Saturday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University senior guard Candis Clear (Memphis, Tenn., East HS) made the game-winning three with 11 seconds remaining to lift the Lady Bucs to a 62-61 come-from-behind win over visiting Arkansas-Monticello Saturday afternoon.

The Cotton Blossoms (2-2) jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and led by as many as 12 points in the first half, taking that 37-25 lead into the locker room at halftime on the strength of 6-of-10 three-point shooting in the first half.  The Lady Bucs (2-2) buckled down in the second half, pulling within 41-38 on a Sarah Combs (Bradford, Tenn./Bradford HS) free throw with 12:50 remaining, but another 7-0 burst from UAM stretched the lead back to double digits.

The Lady Bucs started their final run with a Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) bucket with 2:11 remaining, cutting the UAM lead to 57-53.  Two Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) free throws followed to cut the lead to two points, and a Ridgell steal and fastbreak layup knotted the game at 57 with 1:16 to play.  After the teams traded scores, UAM's Catherine Puckett scored with 26 seconds remaining to take a 61-59 lead.  Ashley Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) found Clear on the right wing for the game-winning three with 11 seconds left, and Clear sealed it by grabbing the rebound of Jordan Goforth's missed baseline jumper with two seconds remaining.

Ridgell scored a game-high 18 for the Lady Bucs, also adding a game-high three steals.  Clear scored 13, and Combs added 11.

Demetra Howlingwolf, Raija McWright, and Logan Hammonds scored nine each to lead UAM.

The Lady Bucs shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) for the game to UAM's 40 percent (20-of-50).  UAM out-rebounded CBU 35-32 but committed 21 turnovers while forcing 18.

The Lady Bucs play their next three on the road, starting next Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they open GSC play at Delta State.  Their next home game is set for Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 5 p.m. against Harding.
