Lady Bucs Win First NCAA Match Over No. 17 UWF

The Lady Bucs upset No. 17 West Florida in the NCAA Division II South Regional Thursday afternoon for the first NCAA Tournament win in school history.
Box Score TAMPA, Fla.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs won their first NCAA Tournament match in school history Thursday afternoon as they upset No. 17 West Florida, the second seed in the regional, in four sets.

After dropping a pair of close sets early in the GSC championship match two weeks ago, the Lady Bucs (21-12) turned the tables on UWF (26-8), scoring seven of the final nine points to win 25-22 after trailing as late as 21-18.  In the second set, the Lady Bucs stormed to a 19-8 lead and held on to win 25-22 to take full control of the match.  The Argos won the third set 25-18, but the Lady Bucs responded in the fourth set, building a 13-7 lead and surviving a late UWF rally to win 25-17.

Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) pounded 13 kills to lead the Lady Bucs' offense, while Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) racked up 11.  Lizzie McLean (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) hit .529 with nine kills.  Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added 14 digs to her match-best 39 assists, while Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added 20 digs.  Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) tacked on 11 digs each.  Alecia Stewart (Rochester, Minn./Century HS) racked up nine block assists, the most for CBU in a match this season, and the Lady Bucs' 13 blocks as a team marked their highest total since 2010.

Jenny Bellairs paced UWF with 14 kills, and Lindsay Homme added 12.  KC Dobbins had 30 assists, and Colleen Starrs notched 20 digs.

The Lady Bucs advance to the South Region semifinals tomorrow at 4 p.m., where they will face third-seeded Palm Beach Atlantic.  The Lady Bucs met the Sailfish in November, dropping a five-set heartbreaker.
