Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss.—Host Delta State used a 29-11 run over 12 minutes bridging the halftime break to take control in a 60-50 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.
The Lady Bucs (2-3, 0-1 GSC) led for most of the first half, going on a 12-2 run after conceding the first bucket to take a 12-4 lead on a
Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) bucket with 13:45 remaining in the half. The Lady Bucs built their lead to eight points three different times, last at 16-8 on two
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) free throws with 7:44 remaining in the half. The DSU (5-1, 1-0) comeback began promptly, with three straight Seneca Walton baskets starting the decisive run. By the time Chelsey Rhodes capped the run with a layup with 16:07 remaining in the game, the Lady Statesmen led 37-27.
The Lady Bucs rallied, cutting the deficit to 41-37 on a Ridgell triple with 12:43 remaining, but DSU answered with a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 51-40, and CBU never came closer than six points again.
Ridgell scored a game-high 17 points to go with seven rebounds, while Reeves,
Sarah Combs (Bradford, Tenn./Bradford HS), and
Jessica Green (Memphis, Tenn./Lausanne HS) scored nine points each.
Walton paced DSU with 16 points, and Brooke Rhodes scored eight to go with a game-high nine rebounds.
DSU shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47) for the game, including 50 percent (9-of-18) in the second half. The Lady Bucs were 32.6 percent (15-of-46) overall but shot 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from three-point range. DSU out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 36-29, including an 11-7 edge in offensive boards, and they forced 22 CBU turnovers while committing 17.
The Lady Bucs return to nonconference play Tuesday night at 6 p.m. as they visit Rhodes. Their next home game is set for Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 5 p.m. against Harding.
