Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo., Cor Jesu Academy) set both the single-match and career records for digs Saturday afternoon, but visiting Shorter edged the Lady Bucs in five sets to knock the Lady Bucs out of first place in the Gulf South Conference.
The Lady Hawks (10-2, 4-2 GSC) struck first when they rallied from a 25-24 deficit to win the first set 27-25 after 11 ties and six lead changes in the set. CBU (9-4, 4-1) answered with a rally of their own in the second set, winning 28-26 after trailing 26-25. The Lady Bucs won the third set by an identical 28-26 score, again after trailing 26-25, but the Lady Hawks scored eight of the last nine points in the fourth set to win 25-18. In the fifth set, Shorter scored six of the last nine points to claim a 15-11 win after the Lady Bucs had cut their deficit to 9-8.
Doder collected a match-best 38 digs, matching the school single-match record originally set by Kim Ries in 2002 at Henderson State. Early in the first set, Doder moved ahead of Krista Gyarmati (2003-06) atop the career digs list. Doder ended the day with 1,662 career digs to Gyarmati's 1,627.
Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the CBU offense with 16 kills, while
Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 15 kills to her 16 digs.
Lizzie McLean (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) tacked on 11 kills.
Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected 11 digs each, with Miles adding 47 assists.
Loren Olive paced Shorter with 19 kills, followed by 15 from Jasmine Crook. Tanequa Whitman garnered 30 digs, and Jordan Corder dished out a match-best 62 assists.
The Lady Bucs wrap up their stretch of three home matches in three days Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they host West Georgia at Canale Arena.
