Lady Bucs Hold Off Tigers 56-51

Taylor Pugh scored nine points in the Lady Bucs' 56-51 win over West Alabama Saturday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs built a 21-7 lead in the first 13 minutes and held on for a 56-51 win over visiting West Alabama Saturday afternoon to earn their first Gulf South Conference win of the season.

Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored 12 of her team-high 20 points during the game-opening run, capping it with a three-point play on the fastbreak after a Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) steal to give the Lady Bucs (4-11, 1-6 GSC) a 21-7 edge with 7:05 remaining in the first half.  The Tigers (8-7, 3-4) pulled within five late in the first half, but they made their best challenge in the second half.

After a Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) three-point play put the Lady Bucs ahead 45-36 with 10:38 remaining, the Tigers went on a 15-7 run to pull within 52-51 on a Tamya Thompson jumper with 3:07 remaining.  Neither team scored for the next minute and a half until Ridgell scored a fastbreak layup off a steal.  Pugh followed with a jumper on the following possession to set the final margin at 56-51.

Ridgell added three steals to her 20 points, while Pugh added nine points.

Nikkia Jordan scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Tigers, and Thompson added 14 points and six rebounds.

The Lady Bucs shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) to the Tigers' 37.5 percent (18-of-48).  UWA out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 37-35, but the Lady Bucs grabbed 17 offensive rebounds to the Tigers' 12 and forced 17 turnovers while committing eight.  The Lady Bucs held 23-3 edge in points off turnovers and a 20-4 advantage in second-chance points.

The Lady Bucs hit the road Thursday night at 5 p.m. as they visit Valdosta State.  Their next home game is set for Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2:05 p.m.
