Lady Bucs Outlast Wolves in Five Sets

Stephanie Korbakes hit .333 with a team-high 16 kills to lead the Lady Bucs to a five-set win over West Georgia Friday night.
Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs never led Friday night's match against visiting West Georgia until the fifth set, when they rallied to snatch a five-set victory and climb into a tie for fourth place in the Gulf South Conference standings.

The Wolves (9-5, 4-3 GSC) never trailed in the first set, winning by a close 25-21 margin. The Lady Bucs (7-9, 4-3) dug out of a 15-13 deficit to win 25-18 in the second set to even the match, but UWG blew open a 19-7 lead in the third set en route to a 25-17 victory. The Lady Bucs squandered a 19-14 edge in the fourth set as UWG rallied to tie the set at 20. The Lady Bucs scored the next three, however, and won 25-23 to force a fifth set. The Wolves appeared to take control in the decisive set, taking an 8-5 lead, but the Lady Bucs scored three straight to tie the set. UWG took leads of 10-8 and 11-9, but the Lady Bucs answered with three straight to take a 12-11 lead. UWG served for set point up 14-13 and 15-14, but the Lady Bucs scored the last three points to claim a 17-15 win.

Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) hit .333 led the Lady Bucs with 16 kills, while Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) matched her 16 kills and added a team-high 17 digs. Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 14 kills and 10 digs, and Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) notched 15 digs. Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) had 12 digs, and Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) dished out 47 assists to go with 11 digs.

Lesley Bemis led UWG with 16 kills, and Melissa Holt logged a match-high 25 digs. Amanda Miller posted a team-high 26 assists.

The Lady Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Valdosta State.
