Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's Gulf South Conference Tournament with a 3-1 win over visiting Delta State Friday afternoon at Signaigo Field.
The Lady Bucs (12-3-2, 6-3-1 GSC) used set pieces to take command early. In the fifth minute,
Camilla Rodrigues (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/American School) gathered a free kick from
Sydney Piper (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a quick shot into the left side of the net. Rodrigues tacked on another score in the 27th minute as she scored on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
Carly Downing (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) extended the Lady Bucs' lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute with her third goal of the season. DSU (3-12-1, 1-8-1) broke through as time expired at the end of the first half whe Lauren May scored off an Erin Tucker cross.
Neither team would find the net in the second half.
The Lady Bucs out-shot DSU 8-7 for the game, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal.
The Lady Bucs wrap up the regular season Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host North Alabama in a non-conference game. The Lady Bucs head into next week's GSC Tournament in Pensacola, Fla., as the No. 2 seed. They will play Friday night against the winner of Thursday night's quarterfinal between third-seeded Valdosta State and either West Georgia or Alabama-Huntsville.
