Strong Second Half Carries Lady Bucs 70-48

Ashley Schaefer scored a career-high 15 points with five assists and three steals in the Lady Bucs' 70-48 win over Mid-Continent Saturday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS-After a first half that saw seven ties and nine lead changes, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs out-scored visiting Mid-Continent 35-15 in the second half as they pulled away to a 70-48 win Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first half, with MCU scoring the first four points and CBU (3-1) having a four-point lead five times, but CBU was unable to extend its lead past four.

In the second half, the Lady Bucs set the tone quickly with back-to-back layups by Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) and Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS). A 10-0 burst in the middle of the half lifted them to a 58-39 edge on back-to-back fastbreak layups by Ridgell and Erica Burgess (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS). The Cougars never came closer than 18 points again.

Ridgell scored a team-high 18 points for the Lady Bucs, while Ashley Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) had a career-high 15 points to go with five assists and three steals. Burgess scored 13 with seven assists and six rebounds.

Stephanie Malone posted a game-high 20 points for MCU, adding eight rebounds, while Chantiera Johnson added 14 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Bucs shot 47 percent (31-of-66) for the game while holding MCU to 31 percent (18-of-58). The Cougars shot just 14.3 percent (4-of-28) in the second half after shooting 46.7 percent (14-of-30) in the first half. The Lady Bucs out-rebounded the Cougars 43-40 and forced 18 turnovers while committing 13. The Lady Bucs also held a 31-4 edge in fastbreak points and a 42-22 lead in points in the paint.

The Lady Bucs return to action Tuesday night, Nov. 26, at 5 p.m. as they host Harding.
