Alex Bickenbach (Memphis, Tenn., St. Benedict HS) scored two goals with an assist to lead the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to a 3-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville Friday night in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament, advancing to the championship game for the first time since 2004.
The Lady Bucs (13-4-2) struck early as
Carmen Manes (Memphis, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) scored on the game's first shot in the fourth minute, assisted by Bickenbach and
Katelyn Graham (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS). The lead remained 1-0 into the second half, when Bickenbach scored her first goal in the 56th minute to give CBU a 2-0 edge.
UAH (5-10-5) cut the margin in half in the 70th minute as Sydnie Fiocca scored off the rebound of a Melody Dodd shot. Bickenbach set the final margin shortly afterwards when she headed in a cross from Graham in the 71st minute, and the Lady Bucs held on to the 3-1 win.
The Lady Bucs out-shot UAH 15-6 for the game, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal.
Robyn Wade (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) made three saves in goal for the Lady Bucs.
CBU will return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. as they take on No. 3 West Florida for the GSC Championship.
