Box Score MEMPHIS-Visiting Valdosta State used an 18-5 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Thursday night at Canale Arena as they won 68-60.
The Lady Blazers (16-9, 9-8 GSC) used a 17-3 run in the first half to take a 24-11 lead on a Courtney Sprague layup with 4 minutes remaining, but the Lady Bucs (6-19, 3-14) knotted the game at 31 with 16:27 remaining when a
Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) jumper in the lane capped a 16-1 run that started in the final seconds of the first half.
VSU regained the lead, but the Lady Bucs had pulled within a 42-38 margin on a
Sarah Combs (Bradford, Tenn./Bradford HS) three-point play with 10:35 remaining when VSU went on the decisive 18-5 run, capped by a Kaylee Higginbotham layup that gave them a 60-43 edge with 3:37 remaining. The Lady Bucs whittled the lead back to five points twice in the final minutes but were unable to come closer.
Ridgell scored a game-high 24 points with seven rebounds, and
Candis Clear (Memphis, Tenn./East HS) tacked on 15 off the bench.
Kourtnee Williams scored 17 to lead Valdosta State, and Courtney Sprague added 14.
VSU shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) to the Lady Bucs' 31.6 percent (18-of-57) for the game. CBU was nearly perfect at the free throw line, making 95.5 percent (21-of-22), the second-best percentage in a game in school history, second only to their perfect 11-for-11 at Harding in November of 2011. VSU out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 37-24, including an 11-9 edge in offensive boards, but the Lady Bucs forced 20 turnovers while committing 13.
The Lady Bucs wrap up the regular season with Senior Day Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. against West Florida.
