Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn., White Station HS) scored 25 points to lead the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to a 67-60 win at Valdosta State Saturday afternoon to remain tied for second place at the midpoint of the Gulf South Conference schedule.
The Lady Bucs (10-6, 6-4 GSC) took control early, using a 9-0 run to take an 11-4 lead on an
Erica Burgess (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) jumper with 13:19 remaining in the half. A 17-9 spurt late in the half lifted them to a 36-23 lead on an
Ashley Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) trey with 1:30 remaining in the half.
VSU (9-7, 4-6) used a 20-10 run to cut the Lady Bucs' lead to 48-47 on an April Thomas three-pointer with 7:22 remaining. Burgess scored the next six points, however, and Ridgell capped the 8-0 run with a basket that gave CBU a 56-47 lead with 5:09 remaining. The Lady Blazers never came closer than three points again.
Ridgell scored her game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting, adding five rebounds and two steals. Burgess tacked on 17 points with five steals.
Madison Luckett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) and
Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) added eight each.
Kourtnee Williams led the Lady Blazers with 17 points, and Thomas scored 13.
The Lady Bucs shot 54.3 percent (25-of-46) from the floor while holding VSU to 33.9 percent (19-of-56). CBU held a 33-32 edge on the boards, while VSU had a 15-7 lead in offensive boards and forced 20 turnovers while committing 19.
The Lady Bucs and West Florida are both 6-4, three games behind first-place Delta State.
CBU opens the second half of the GSC schedule Thursday night at 5 p.m. as they host Alabama-Huntsville.
