MEMPHIS-The No. 20/17 Christian Brothers University Bucs rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to tie the game in the last four minutes against Delta State Thursday night, but the visiting Statesmen outscored CBU 10-6 in the final three minutes to upset the Bucs 72-68.
The Statesmen (5-4, 2-1 GSC) used a 19-6 run midway through the first half to open a 26-16 lead on a Devin Schmidt triple with 6:42 remaining in the half, but the Bucs (4-2, 2-1) answered with a 21-8 burst bridging the halftime break to take a 37-34 lead on a
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) three-point play with 17:17 remaining.
The Statesmen answered that run with a 26-9 run of their own, making 11-of-13 shots in the burst, capped by an Alister Chisholm three-point play with 7:49 remaining, giving DSU a 60-46 edge.
Back-to-back Sall layups sparked the Bucs' comeback. Three straight triples, one by
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) and two by
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS), brought them back within a point, and a
Jeff Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) three tied the game at 62 with 3:53 remaining. The Statesmen regained the lead for good when Schmidt scored on a three-point play with 2:47 remaining. After the teams traded baskets, DSU made five of eight free throws in the final minute to hold of CBU.
Sall scored a game-high 22 points for the Bucs, making 8-of-14 shots and 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Fleming scored 15, followed by 11 and five rebounds from Casey and 10 with six assists for Larkin.
Schmidt led the Statesmen with 19 points. Chisholm added 16. Zelvin Smith scored 11, and LaQuavius Cotton tacked on 10.
The Statesmen shot 57.4 percent (27-of-47) for the game to the Bucs' 55.6 percent (25-of-45). DSU was 73.7 percent (14-of-19) at the charity stripe, while the Bucs were just 56.3 percent (9-of-16). DSU out-rebounded the Bucs 23-18. Each team grabbed three offensive rebounds, and the Bucs committed 13 turnovers while forcing 12.
The Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they host Mississippi College.
