No. 24/21 Bucs Down Hawks 74-61

ROME, Ga.-After trailing for most of the first half, the No. 24/21 Christian Brothers University Bucs used a 30-13 run bridging the halftime break to seize control on their way to a 74-61 win at Shorter Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks (5-3, 0-2 GSC) took control with an early 11-2 burst capped by a Dedric Ware bucket that gave them a 20-13 lead with 9:38 remaining in the half.

The Hawks' lead was 26-20 before a Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) layup sparked what became the decisive run. Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored a layup just before halftime to tie the game, then the Bucs made five of their first six shots in the second half as they scored 11 straight to take the lead. By the time Casey capped the 30-13 run with a free throw, the Bucs led 50-39 with 11:55 remaining, and the Hawks never came closer than six points again.

Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS), who led the nation in assists prior to the game, scored a career-high 21 points with six rebounds, while Sall scored 21 with 16 rebounds and five assists. Casey scored 19 with seven rebounds and a game-best four steals.

Ware paced the Hawks with 18 points, and Jordan Jacks added nine.

For the game, the Bucs shot 52 percent (26-of-50), including a sizzling 66.7 percent (16-of-24) in the second half. They held the Hawks to 41.9 percent (26-of-62) and out-rebounded Shorter 38-30, with each team grabbing nine offensive rebounds. The Bucs committed a season-high 17 turnovers while forcing 15, their first time this season to lose the turnover margin.

The Bucs return to Canale Arena Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they host Delta State.
