No. 16 Lady Statesmen Edge Lady Bucs 66-61

Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss.-No. 16 Delta State used a 20-4 run bridging the halftime break to take control on their way to a 66-61 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Monday night.

The Lady Bucs (12-10, 8-8 GSC) led for most of the first half, using a 17-6 run capped by an Ashley Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) three-pointer to take a 19-10 lead with 7:50 remaining in the first half.

DSU (18-4, 13-3) took the lead for good with the decisive 20-4 run, beginning after a pair of Erica Burgess (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) free throws gave CBU a 28-22 lead with 1:57 remaining in the first half and capped by a Myiesha Stewart bucket that gave DSU a 42-32 lead with 15:55 remaining in the game. The Lady Bucs whittled the lead back to five points, then four, then two, but DSU stretched the lead back to 62-55 with 3:00 remaining.

The Lady Bucs had one more run in them, as consecutive baskets by Schaefer, Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) and Burgess trimmed the lead to 62-61 with 59 seconds remaining. But they went 0-3 from the field with a turnover and the Lady Statesmen went 4-for-6 from the free throw line to salt away the victory.

Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) led the Lady Bucs with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Burgess scored 12.

Seneca Walton scored 17 points with seven rebounds to lead DSU, and Chelsey Rhodes also scored 17.

The Lady Bucs shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) for the game to DSU's 46.9 percent (23-of-49). The Lady Statesmen held a 35-30 edge on the boards, but CBU grabbed 11 offensive rebounds to DSU's 10 and forced 16 turnovers while committing 12.

The Lady Bucs return to action Thursday night at 6 p.m. as they visit Union. Their next home game is set for Thursday, Feb. 27, at 5 p.m. against West Florida.
