Bulldogs Outlast Lady Bucs 71-63

Box Score JACKSON, Tenn.-Host Union outscored the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 26-18 over the final 12:03 as they pulled away to a 71-63 win Thursday night.

The Lady Bucs (12-11, 8-9 GSC) jumped to a 6-0 lead early and led by as many as nine points, at 18-9 midway through the first half. Union (18-5, 13-4) chipped away at the lead, closing within 31-30 at halftime.

For the first nine minutes of the second half, neither side could make much headway, with neither team leading by more than three points until Union went on a 7-0 run capped by a Celsea Bodiford triple with 10:28 remaining, giving them a 52-45 lead. The Lady Bucs trimmed the lead back to four points twice, but Union sank eight of their final 12 free throws over the final five minutes to seal the victory.

Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 26 points. Erica Burgess (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) added 15 with a career-high 11 rebounds, and Ashley Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) tacked on 11.

Amy Philamlee led Union with 15 points. Shelby Ashcraft scored 13, followed by 12 from Bodiford and 10 by LaTesa McLaughlin.

Union shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) to the Lady Bucs' 38.3 percent (23-of-60). The Bulldogs were 85.2 percent (23-of-27) at the charity stripe to CBU's 71.4 percent (15-of-21). Union out-rebounded CBU 41-36, but the Lady Bucs forced 11 turnovers while committing nine.

The Lady Bucs play their final road game of the year Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they visit North Alabama. They step out of GSC play Monday night at 5:30 p.m. as they host Lane in the makeup of a game originally scheduled for Dec. 7, which was canceled due to hazardous travel conditions caused by an ice storm.
