Lady Bucs Clinch Best GSC Finish in 10 Years With 64-57 Win

Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs clinched their best Gulf South Conference finish since 2003-04 Thursday night at Canale Arena with a 64-57 win over West Florida.

The Lady Bucs (15-11, 10-9 GSC) opened the game with an 18-7 run capped by an Ashley Schaefer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) three-pointer with 13:47 remaining in the first half. UWF (16-9, 11-8) answered with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 20 on a Brianna Williams jumper, and they took a 28-26 lead on a Toynetta Johnson three-pointer with 1:52 remaining in the first half.

CBU regained the lead for good when Emily Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) banked in a three-pointer at the end of the shot clock with 46 seconds remaining in the firs thalf, sparking a 20-5 run bridging the halftime break. Erica Burgess (Memphis, Tenn./Central HS) capped the run with a fastbreak layup, giving CBU a 46-33 lead with 12:48 remaining. UWF never came closer than six points the rest of the way.

Breanna Ridgell (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored a game-high 22 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Burgess scored 20 with six rebounds and two steals. Samantha Reeves (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) added 10, and Taylor Pugh (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) hauled in a game-high 13 rebounds.

Jasmine Wigfall led the Argos with 16 points, and Katie Bobos scored 14. Johnson scored 10, and Tessah Holt dished a game-high eight assists to go with six points.

The Lady Bucs shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) for the game while holding the Argos to 32.3 percent (20-of-62). UWF out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 37-36, including a 14-7 lead in offensive rebounds, and they forced 15 CBU turnovers while committing 10.

With the win, the Lady Bucs clinched a top-four seed in the GSC Tournament for the first time since 2003-04, when they won the GSC's West Division. With one game remaining, CBU sits a game behind West Florida and tied with Alabama-Huntsville. UWF visits first-place Delta State Saturday, UAH hosts North Alabama and CBU hosts Valdosta State. The Lady Bucs would earn the No. 2 seed with a win and losses by both UWF and UAH. UWF would clinch the No. 2 seed with a win or a CBU loss, and UAH would clinch the No. 2 seed with a win, a CBU win and a UWF loss.

The Lady Bucs wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Valdosta State. They will advance to the GSC Tournament next week at the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. CBU's quarterfinal game will either be Thursday or Friday, with the semifinals set for Saturday and the championship game Sunday.
