MCKENZIE, Tenn.-Christian Brothers University freshman forward
Brendan Bennett (Belfast, Northern Ireland, St. Mary's Christian Brothers Grammar School) notched a goal and an assist in his college debut to lift the Bucs to a 2-1 overtime win over Bethel in the season opener for both schools. The victory marked CBU head coach Clint Browne's 100th career win at CBU.
Bennett opened the scoring in the 55th minute, finding the net after CBU (1-0) came up empty on its first seven shots.
The lead would be short-lived, as Bethel (0-1) answered in the 64th minute as Linsworth Daley scored off a Luke Sellers corner kick, knotting the game at 1 and eventually sending it to overtime.
In the third minute of overtime, Bennett fed a cross to
Jose Ferraz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), who scored his first goal of the season to give the Bucs the victory.
CBU out-shot Bethel 12-11 for the game, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
Browne now has a record of 100-74-16 in his 11th year at CBU, where he is second on the school's career win list behind Richard Bute (1985-96) with 112.
The Bucs return to action next Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they visit Harding. Their home opener is Saturday, Sept. 13, at 3 p.m. as they host Lindenwood.
