JACKSON, Tenn.-Union guard Corieon Pearson buried a 25-foot three-pointer from the left wing with 1.8 seconds remaining to give the hosts a 58-55 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Thursday night as both teams wrapped up the first half of the Gulf South Conference schedule.
The Bulldogs (13-4, 7-4 GSC) threatened to run away with the game late in the first half, closing the half on an 11-4 run to take a 28-20 lead, and a Marterrance Brock three-point play on the first play of the second half gave them an 11-point lead, their largest of the night.
The Bucs (8-7, 5-6) responded with a 15-3 run capped by a
Jordan Miller (Fulton, Ky./Fulton City HS) layup that gave CBU a 38-37 lead with 11:49 remaining, and neither side would lead by more than five points again.
The Bulldogs used a 6-0 burst to retake the lead for good, extending their lead to 51-46 on a Jordan Montgomery dunk with 3:57 remaining. A
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) jumper and a
Jeff Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) triple knotted the game with 2:47 remaining, but Pearson found Montgomery for a three-pointer 30 seconds later to put Union back on top.
The Bucs went in to
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) for a pair of baskets, sandwiching a Pearson free throw, to tie the game at 55 with 35 seconds remaining. After each team missed the front end of a one-and-one with 30 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs held for the last shot and Pearson buried the game-winner. The Bucs were unable to get a shot off the inbounds pass.
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) and
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) led the Bucs with 12 points each, and Sall added 11 with a game-best 11 rebounds.
Montgomery scored a game-high 16 points for the Bulldogs, and Pearson scored 13. Ashanti Day tacked on 11 with a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bucs shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) for the game to the Bulldogs' 35.7 percent (20-of-56). The Bulldogs shot 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from three-point range while holding the Bucs to 35 percent (7-of-20), and the Bulldogs shot 66.7 percent (8-of-12) at the free throw line while the Bucs were just 33.3 percent (2-of-6), including 0-for-2 in the final two minutes.
The Bucs open the second half of the GSC schedule Thursday night at 7 p.m. as the host Shorter.
