Bucs Sweep Choctaws For Series Win

MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs exploded for 19 runs in two innings as they swept a doubleheader from Mississippi College 9-2 and 15-6 Saturday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Bucs (5-4, 2-1 GSC) used a six-run sixth inning to pull away for a 9-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Choctaws (6-2, 1-2) took an early lead with two runs in the top of the second, scoring on two singles, a walk and a double.
• The Bucs cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning. Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) walked and came around to score on singles by Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS).
• CBU tied the game in the bottom of the third. Blain Curtis (Atoka, Tenn./Tipton Rosemark Academy) singled and scored on singles by Cameron Coker (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) and Cooley.
• The Bucs took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Walks to Myles Holliman (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS), Coker and Cooley loaded the bases with one out for a Kelly sacrifice fly.
• CBU exploded for six runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Back-to-back doubles by Josh Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) and Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS). Curtis singled, and Holliman was hit by a pitch to load the bases, setting the table for a three-run double by Coker. Cooley was hit by a pitch, and Kelly followed with a two-run double to give CBU a 9-2 lead.

KEY STATS:
• Curtis went 2-for-5 with two runs.
• Coker was 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBI.
• Kelly went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
• Cooley was 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks.
• Kilgore went 2-for-4.
• Peyton McArthur (Senatobia, Miss./Senatobia HS) threw a gem, allowing two runs in seven innings as he scattered seven hits and two walks to improve to 2-1.
• Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) tossed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one baserunner on a walk but facing the minimum as he induced a double play to escape the inning.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
After scoring two runs in the second, the Bucs scored 13 runs in the third inning, tied for their highest-scoring inning on record, en route to a 15-6 win to claim the series victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• CBU scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning. Coker reached on an error and Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) legged out a two-out infield single. Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) doubled to right field to bring them both home and give CBU a 2-0 lead.
• The third inning started innocently enough, with a Casey Goodwin double and a flyout. Holliman hit an RBI single, and Coker and Cooley followed with back-to-back doubles. Kelly walked to load the bases again, and Joe hit an RBI single. Caleb Goodwin hit a three-run double to left to extend the Bucs' lead to 8-0. Johnson reached on an error and Casey Goodwin worked a walk to load the bases back up, still with just one out. Curtis hit a two-run single to right, and Holliman loaded the bases with another walk. Coker smoked a two-run single to left to extend the lead to 12-0. Cooley doubled to center and Kelly hit an RBI single to give the Bucs a 14-0 lead, and a sacrifice fly by Joe capped the scoring and gave the Bucs a 15-0 cushion.
• The Choctaws scored their first run of the game on a single, a walk and a double in the top of the fifth.
• MC scored two more in the sixth on two singles, a walk, an error and a sacrifice fly.
