Lions Outslug Bucs 10-6

MEMPHIS-Visiting Freed-Hardeman built a 9-1 lead and held on through a Christian Brothers University rally as they defeated the Bucs 10-6 Tuesday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

WHAT HAPPENED:
Freed-Hardeman (1-0) dealt the Bucs (2-1) their first loss of the season, scoring runs in six different innings to claim a 10-6 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) doubled to left and scored on a Cameron Coker (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) single to right.
• The Lions took the lead with a barrage of offense in the middle innings. They scored one in the second, two in the third and fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 9-1 lead.
• The Bucs answered in a big way in the bottom of the seventh. Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) started the rally with a single, and Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) drew a walk. With two out, Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) smoked an RBI single through the right side. A walk to Lucas Castleberry (Bryant, Ark./Bryant HS) loaded the bases, and Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was hit by a pitch to bring Joe home. A passed ball scored Mattson, and Coker hit a two-run single to center to bring the Bucs within 9-6.
• The Lions set the final margin in the top of the ninth, scoring one run on a hit batter, a walk, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly.

KEY STATS:
• Coker went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
• Cooley was 2-for-5.
• Goodwin went 1-for-4 with two runs.
• Michael Lartigue (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) threw a scoreless frame, recording three outs on two batters. After inheriting two runners, he struck out the first batter and drew a fly-ball double play on the second, though a run scored first.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs return to action Saturday at noon as they host William Woods for a doubleheader.
