CARROLLTON, Ga.-The Christian Brothers University Bucs outscored No. 24 West Georgia 33-17 over a 13-minute span in the middle of the game as they won 81-72 Saturday afternoon.
After a back-and-forth first half, the Bucs (13-8, 9-8 GSC) went on an 11-0 run in the final four minutes of the first half to turn a 28-all tie into a 39-28 edge on a
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) tip-in with 15 seconds remaining in the first half.
After the first-place Wolves (16-6, 11-6) used a 7-2 burst to trim the CBU lead to 41-35 on an Emory Bernard dunk with 18:37 remaining, the Bucs outscored them 20-10 over the next nine minutes, taking a 61-45 lead, their largest of the day, on a
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) dunk with 9:07 to play. The Wolves never came closer than six points again.
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored 24 points for the Bucs, and Sall poured in 24 with 19 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Hildreth scored 14 with seven rebounds, and
Jeff Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) added 10 with six assists.
Deonta Stocks led the Wolves with 34 points and four steals, while Alex Abreu scored 17 with seven rebounds and six assists.
The Bucs won despite shooting just 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from three-point range, their second-lowest percentage of the season and tied for the fewest threes made. The Bucs shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) overall for the game and 77.8 percent (28-of-36) at the free throw line. The free throw percentage is tied for their second-highest of the season, and they had not attempted more than 28 free throws in the season. UWG shot 40.0 percent (26-of-65) from the floor overall and 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from beyond the arc.
The Bucs finish the regular season with four of their final five games at home, beginning Thursday night at 7 p.m. when they host West Florida.
