MEMPHIS-Three Christian Brothers University pitchers combined to hold visiting William Woods to one first-inning run as they claimed a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED:• For the third straight game in the series, the Owls (3-1) struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, using a pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI groundout to take an early lead.
• The Bucs (3-3) struck back in the bottom of the third inning.
Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was hit by a pitch, and a
Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) walk and a
Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) single loaded the bases with one out. With two out,
Cameron Coker (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) smoked a double down the left field line to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead.
• CBU tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Josh Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) worked a one-out walk snd stole second, moving to third on a passed ball. WIth two away, he scored on a
Myles Holliman (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) RBI single through the right side, giving the Bucs a 3-1 lead.
• The Bucs had to escape jams in the last two innings. In the eighth, the Owls had runners on second and third with one out after a hit batter and a double, but
Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) drew an infield popout and a flyout to escape the threat. In the ninth, the Owls put runners on first and second with one out after a pair of singles, but
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) snared a one-out line drive and threw to second for a game-ending double play.
KEY STATS:•
Peyton McArthur (Senatobia, Miss./Senatobia HS) evened his record at 1-1 after throwing six and a third scoreless innings. He allowed four hits and two walks.
• Porter earned his first save with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits and struck out one.
• Holliman went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
• Coker drove in two runs.
NOTABLE:• Prior to Sunday's first pitch, CBU completed yesterday's second game, which WWU won 9-0.
WHAT'S NEXT:The Bucs hit the road for the first time this season Tuesday afternoon when they visit Rhodes at 2 p.m. Their next home game is Saturday at noon, when they host Mississippi College for a doubleheader.
