Lions Sweep Bucs in Monday Twinbill

FLORENCE, Ala.-Host North Alabama scored 15 runs in the first game and threw a one-hit shutout in the second game as they swept a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs 15-5 and 5-0 Monday afternoon.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
North Alabama (15-5, 7-4 GSC) took advantage of 13 walks as they rallied for a 15-5 win over the Bucs (7-9, 3-6) in the first game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Bucs struck first with three runs in the first inning. Myles Holliman (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) singled and scored on a Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) RBI single. Cameron Coker (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) followed with a two-run homer to give the Bucs a 3-0 edge.
• The Lions answered with a solo homer by Brett Guzay in the bottom of the first inning.
• UNA tied the game at three in the bottom of the second with two runs on two walks, a single, a sacrifice fly and an error.
• CBU regained the lead in the top of the third when Joe reached on a two-out single. Coker walked and Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) singled to load the bases for a Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) RBI walk.
• The Lions tied the game back up in the bottom of the fourth with a run on a double, a walk, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
• UNA began to pull away with a four-run fourth inning on two singles, a double and three walks.
• The Bucs scored a run in the top of the fifth. Holliman doubled and moved to third on a Joe single, scoring on a passed ball.
• The Lions put it out of reach with a six-run fifth inning, taking advantage of an error, three walks, two singles and a triple.
• UNA ended the game with a run on a double and a single in the bottom of the seventh.

KEY STATS:
• Holliman went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs.
• Joe was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
• Coker went 1-for-3 with a walk, and a two-run homer, his first of the season.
• Kelly drew a pair of walks.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
UNA pitcher Kyle Conkle spun a one-hit shutout to lift the Lions to a 5-0 win in the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Lions struck first with a run in the bottom of the first on three singles.
• UNA added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a Dylan Boston leadoff homer.
• The Lions tacked on another run in the fifth on a triple and an RBI groundout.
• UNA set the final margin with a pair of sixth-inning runs on a triple, a double, an error and a groundout.

KEY STATS:
• Only two Bucs reached base in the game. Coker went 1-for-3 after he led off the second with a single.
• Cooley worked a one-out walk in the seventh inning.
• Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) went the distance, allowing five runs, four earned, as he scattered 10 hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out six batters.

NOTABLE:
• Coker extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and he has reached base safely in all 16 games, including at least one hit in 14.
• Cooley has reached base safely in 15 of 16 games, including at least one hit in 13.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs return to action Wednesday afternoon as they visit LeMoyne-Owen at Gagliano Field. Their next home game is Saturday at noon as they host a doubleheader against Valdosta State.
