No. 11 Chargers Sweep Bucs

MEMPHIS-No. 11 Alabama-Huntsville scored 25 runs Saturday as they swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon at Nadicksbernd Field.

GAME 1:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Chargers (31-6-1, 17-6-1) two or more runs in four straight innings as they pulled away to a 12-5 win in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• UAH opened the scoring with two runs on a walk, a double and a single in the top of the second.
• The Chargers doubled their lead in the top of the third on a single and a two-run Colton Simbeck homer.
• The Bucs (9-20, 4-15) broke through for a run in the bottom of the third. Mickey Smith (Arlington, Tenn./Arlington HS) singled, and Myles Holliman (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) singled him to third. Smith scored on a groundout by Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS).
• UAH scored two runs for the third straight inning in the top of the fourth, on three singles and a double.
• The Chargers extended their lead to 10-1 with a four-run fifth inning on four walks and two singles.
• The Bucs scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) singled, Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) walked and Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) singled to load the bases with none out. A passed ball brought Cooley home, and Casey Goodwin (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) scored Kelly with a groundout. A wild pitch scored Caleb Goodwin to bring CBU within six.
• CBU added another run in the bottom of the eighth.  Caleb Goodwin singled to left and moved to third when Josh Johnson (Somerville, Tenn./Fayette Academy) reached on an error, scoring on a Smith single to center.
• The Chargers tacked on two more in the top of the ninth on two walks, a double and two singles.

KEY STATS:
• Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run and one RBI.
• Holliman went 2-for-4 with a walk.
• Caleb Goodwin was 2-for-3 with two runs.
• Kelly drew a pair of walks.

GAME 2:
WHAT HAPPENED:
The Bucs scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was after UAH used a nine-run sixth to open a 13-0 lead, winning 13-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Chargers opened the scoring with a run in the second on a double and a single.
• A Ben Hall solo homer in the top of the third gave UAH a 2-0 edge.
• The Chargers tacked on two more in the top of the fourth on a Simbeck homer, a walk and two singles.
• UAH blew it open in the top of the sixth with nine runs on two triples, three doubles, four singles and two errors.
• The Bucs mounted a furious comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. Caleb Goodwin started it with an infield single, and he stole second. Riley Kilgore (Cordova, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was hit by a pitch, and Blain Curtis (Atoka, Tenn./Tipton Rosemark Academy) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Holliman was hit by a pitch to bring home a run, and Joe Mattson (Nashville, Tenn./Franklin Road Academy) followed with an RBI single. Cameron Coker (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) hit a two-run double to center, and Cooley and Kelly each added RBI singles. Kilgore set the final margin with a two-run double to left-center to pull the Bucs within 13-8, but a groundout ended the game.

• Kelly went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and one RBI.
• Caleb Goodwin was 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored.
• Kilgore went 1-for-3 with a double, a run and two RBI.
• Curtis was 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and a run.
• Ryan Abone (Germantown, Tenn./Houston HS) threw an inning and a third of scoreless relief.
