MEMPHIS-Christian Brothers University sophomore forward
Adam Dieball (Cincinnati, Ohio, Lakota East HS) and junior center
Jordan Miller (Fulton, Ky., Fulton City HS) combined for 45 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bucs to a 74-65 win over Trevecca Nazarene Wednesday night at Canale Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Trojans (1-2) opened the game on a 17-6 run, taking the 11-point lead when Jacob Williams knocked down a three-pointer with 13:11 remaining in the first half.
• Miller started the comeback for the Bucs (2-1) the next trip down the court with a three-point play, then he followed with a jumper in the paint. By the time
Jeff Larkin (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) capped what became a 12-2 run, CBU had closed within a point at 19-18.
• Dieball sat much of the first half after picking up two early fouls, but he returned with four minutes left and knocked down three straight three-pointers in just 63 seconds to give the Bucs a 33-25 lead with 3:00 remaining in the half.
• Trevecca started the second half on another run, using a 14-2 burst to take a 43-39 edge on a Donovan Donaldson jumper with 15:20 remaining.
• Yet again it was Dieball who sparked the Bucs' comeback, starting with a three and a layup. When his fifth three of the game capped the 17-5 run, the Bucs led 56-48, and they never allowed Trevecca closer than six points again, leading by as many as 14 points in the final minutes.
KEY STATS:
• Dieball scored 24 points with four rebounds, two blocks and two assists. He went 8-of-13 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point range.
• Miller scored 21 with nine rebounds off the bench, making 9-of-15 field goals and all three free throw attempts.
•
Brad Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder HS) scored 10 points with five rebounds and two assists.
• Larkin was held to nine points but dished out a career-high eight assists.
• The Bucs shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the floor but just 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point range. Trevecca shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) overall and 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from beyond the arc.
• The Bucs out-rebounded Trevecca 34-28, with each team grabbing nine offensive boards.
• CBU committed 12 turnovers to the Trojans' 10.
HEAD COACH MIKE NIENABER'S THOUGHTS:
On Jordan Miller's strong performance:
"I told him when he was coming out there at the end, there's no way we win tonight without what he did. Really, he's done that two straight games now. Adam's gotten in foul trouble. He's really come off and just been a force around the basket. We have tried for more than a year now to get those two in the game together. We've almost given up on it, but when Jordan's playing like he was playing tonight, I finally said we've gotta try. There's certain nights where that combination is going to click."
On Brad Miller's night:
"The other thing that was encouraging was, we got great minutes from our other two freshmen over the weekend. Mitch and Joe were flip a coin, who's freshman of the week? Tonight, Brad came in and made big plays, got big rebounds. That's stuff he's been doing consistently, and that's why we started him the first couple of games. He's been so active rebounding. He's just a scrappy, hard-nosed kid and tonight, finally, he got the shots to go in."
On Jeff Larkin's career-high eight assists:
"That was a good thing to see, because the shots weren't necessarily falling for him again tonight, he was 1-for-5 from three."
On the win as a whole:
"It's a good win. We got these two games we had to have at home. Now we go for some tough games on the road over the next couple of weeks, but hopefully we can keep growing, keep getting better and we'll see how it goes."
"The thing I was happiest about tonight, it was a team win, because three guys who started on the bench that they've all started for us. The three guys who were sitting on the bench, instead of pouting, Cody gave us great minutes tonight. To me, when we were winning the game, he was in there doing the things that Cody does, playing good defense. So that was key. Obviously Jordan's numbers speak for themselves. Then as it turns out, down the stretch, Brad made key plays. Mitch was a little off tonight, shots weren't falling for him. Joe was a little out of it, but he came in and got a big bucket for us at the end. Obviously it wasn't as big a game for Mitch and Joe but other guys came in and stepped up."
On the team as a whole:
"I like this team. I like the chemistry that we have, and the thing that really makes this team fun to coach is those guys that aren't playing. Those five guys at the end of the bench that aren't playing come in every day, give us 100 percent, and they're into it. We've got a good group of guys that really support each other, and these days that's rare. Our guys like each other and they're a good group."
WHAT'S NEXT:
The Bucs hit the road for three straight games, starting Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. as they visit Harding. Their next home game is set for Wednesday, Dec. 7, when they host No. 3 Bellarmine.
